My Thoughts On ModNation Racers

13 Jun

When I was little my first game system was the Nintendo 64. To this day I still think the most fun I ever had gaming was with that system. Every week my father would take me and my little brother to rent a game from the nearby Blockbuster, and we’d either take turns playing it or play together if it had multiplayer. The look and feel of games then was simple. There was no need for realistic graphics back then. All that we cared about was having fun playing games. We didn’t need elaborate stories, we just wanted funny dialogue, catchy music, and some great gameplay of course. Those days of simplicity are long gone though. Not that I don’t like modern games. I just wish I could relive those days one more time. Just once more!

And now I can…

ModNation Racers is a kart racing game. While playing it, I felt like I was playing an improved version of one of my old N64 games. It’s so cool! You start of by creating your own custom racer, called a mod. The character creation system is VERY deep. It allows you to fine tune little details of your mod with ease, as well as make him stand out very easily in a crowd. Changing hair, facial expressions, his clothes, etc., is very fun and enjoyable.

After creatign your character, you are able to design his/her kart that he/she will race in. This is also very detailed, allowing you to choose parts for your kart that let people know that it’s your kart. Want a cardboard box for your kart’s body? Knock yourself out! How about a Duracell battery for an engine, or a lawn mower? Go right ahead. The choice is yours!

Where the game really shines though is in track creation. The ability to create your own track is awesome, but the fact that it’s so easy is what’s so surprising. Creating a track to race on is often more fun than making your mod and kart. The options for customization allow you not only to created the track itself, but the environment on the edges of it, the time of day, where the sun is positioned (which changes the map’s lighting), even the weather.

And then the LittleBigPlanet formula comes into play: Play, Create, Share. The sharing part is amazing. You can instantly download other players creations from around the globe into your game. This includes mods, karts, and tracks. You can drive around in the Mystery Machine, play as Iron Man, drive on tracks that are in the exact shape of a snake if you look at them from above, etc. There’s a ton to do here.

The racing itself is a blast. Drifting past opponents and knocking them out with power-ups feels very rewarding. The power-ups in this game are also upgradeable. By this I mean that when you pick up a power-up, it is of use, but only to a certain degree. If you save the power-up and pick up another one, the one you have will go up a level and be more useful. A speed up power-up may seem useful, but it’s even more useful if you upgrade it into a teleporter, jumping way ahead of the pack.

When I played those old games on the Nintendo, I always wanted to play them with lots of other people. With online play, that fantasy has been realized. The online multiplayer runs very smoothly and is super addicting. Testing your skills against smarter foes is a challenge, but a rewarding one. There’s a level-up system that goes with online play, and you get experience points for doing well in races. The goal in doing this is to become the best racer in the game, who gets a big statue of himself/herself put up in the community area in the game, which is basically an ingame lobby where players can meet each other, chat, and decide what they plan to do for the day.

Overall, ModNation Racers is a great game. It allows me to relive the days when it was just me, my brother, and my N64. I believe anyone who likes kart racers, or owns a PS3, should pick it up. You won’t regret it.

Removing “Brother” Post

25 Apr

Hey guys. If you got a chance to see the video of my brother dancing, you’re very lucky. It got taken down because apparently it violated some copyright laws having to do with the music (even though there was something in the video crediting the song and even directing viewers to a place where it could be bought). I’m removing the post because of this. Sorry you never saw it, if you didn’t that is.

Big Paintball Battle (SUPER COOL!)

1 Mar

Hey, check out this video of a huge paintball battle! It may be a bit old, but I don’t think that many people have seen it. It’s a match with the theme, “Star Warz”. I believe there’s an estimate of 100 people per team. Enjoy! Video was uploaded by CamwolfsCave onto YouTube on December 11, 2007.

PAINTBALL!!!

21 Feb

My little brother recently invited me to watch him play paintball at PSI Xtreme Sports, a paintball/airsoft gaming area. After using the back door of the shop and entering the large setup area, my father and I walked over to the side of the city ball arena (city ball being paintball with wooden barriers). After only one game I was hooked and pulled out my wallet. I bought a jersey, got the extra rental equipment (helmet and pod holder (pod being an ammo pod)), my bro let me use his old gun, and I hopped onto the field.

My father and I formed some great strategies off the field, and then I executed them well. One of our strategies was carried out so well (by me leading half our squad) that we took out nearly everybody on their team, save one guy. Paintball is the single most exhilarating sport I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. The speed, the strategy, and the teamwork all make paintballing more exciting than any other activity. I love it.

My Thoughts On Shutter Island

21 Feb

The premise of Shutter Island is fairly easy to describe. Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck are on a ferry to Shutter Island, a maximum security prison for the criminally insane. They are there to investigate a mystery. Apparently a prisoner by the name of Rachael Solando escaped from her cell while it was locked from the outside, the window was barred, and there were several guards outside. How did she escaped? Did they find her? You’ll have to see the movie to find out.

Shutter Island’s presentation isn’t scary, but it does definitely creep you out. Chills ran down my spine as they entered the facility, knowing right away that this place wasn’t haunted by monsters or ghosts, or anything supernatural, but the very people running it. The visual style was very eerie and always left me with a sort of wide-eyed look on my face. The story is very gripping and keeps you sucked in the entire time. And the plot twist at the end is so mind-boggling, you’re sure to see it again just to understand it.

Shutter Island isn’t for everybody. You’d better be at least a bit smart because of how complex and diverse the story is. It’s a mystery, not a horror film. For any who believed that it might be the case, do not let the trailers mislead you. Shutter Island is smart, sometimes funny, and has an ending that makes you wonder just what did happen next, as if a sequel could come (though I’m sure one won’t). It’s well worth full price.

My Recent Meeting With Gus Bilirakis

16 Jan

Hey guys! It’s me, Liak (or if you saw the “Oldie But A Goodie” thing you probably know me as Dylan now). I just thought it’d be pretty cool if I told you all about my meeting with congressman Gus Bilirakis just yesterday. It was really cool and he answered a lot of interesting questions.

For one thing, he’s totally against the new Healthcare Bill, saying that if it passes it will be the beginning of a sort of “Socialistic Era” where the government is in complete control of everything. Even though it’s just one part of the country, it is the first step (is successful).

He also told us (being me and my class) about Guantanamo Bay, or “Gitmo” for short, to those of you who don’t know. He told us that when he went there it wasn’t at all what it was depicted as in movies and on the covers of magazines (a lot of those pictures on magazines were actually taken at Afghanistan apparently, and not at Gitmo). It isn’t a dungeon, but really a top notch facility where the prisoners receive proper treatment from their, for lack of a better term, captors. He said one of their favorite DVDs to watch is Seinfeld, and that if ever do they feel depressed they can go talk to somebody about there troubles (sort of like a psychiatrist without the drugs they use to kill their customers and the fake disorders that have no proof of existence. Just the listening to the problems part). He also mentioned that the method of interrogation known as water boarding has only been used twice in American history, though my memory fails me as to whether he said it was used in or out of Gitmo. The method they use there is really just asking questions and getting answers, and that the prisoners who leave and say they were tortured are liars.

He’s also against Cap & Trade for the very same reason as the Healthcare Bill. He said it would hurt small businesses a lot, and he also mentioned that there’s no real proof that humans are what’s really causing this climate change.

He gave us these lucky pennies too with the Bilirakis seal around them. He’s a Greek descendant so it was kind of a part of his tradition. They were cool coins, except whenever I want it to land on heads it lands on tails, and vice versa.

Anyhow, I’m hoping I’ll be able to do an internship in his office this summer. It would help with my writing carrier a lot to know what goes on in the world of politics first hand.
